Legal Requirements
There are certain legal requirements involved in getting married.
Identification Required
If you were born in Australia – Original Birth Certificate If born overseas, either original Birth Certificate (translated if not in English) or overseas passport (may be expired but not cancelled),
Witnesses
2 witnesses are required for the ceremony. They must be over 18 years of age. Thus, the minimum number of people at a ceremony is 5 (Bride, Groom, Celebrant and 2 witnesses.
Ceremony
There are 2 legal requirements to the wording of any civil marriage ceremony in Australia. The ‘Celebrant Monitum’, which is spoken by the celebrant and the inclusion of particular phrasing in your vows. I will explain this to you.
Previously married?
You will need to provide the celebrant with a decree absolute (if divorced) or decree nisi if divorce pending (decree absolute must be produced prior to wedding ceremony.)

- Certificate of Marriage Requires 2 Witness 18 years+
- Marriage Register Requires 2 Witness 18 years+
- Presentation Certificate of Marriage Requires 2 Witness 18 years+
- Application for a Marriage Certificate (optional)
